Crowns and Guards
The small control on the case side combines a grip, a stem connection and a sealing system—not just a silhouette.
The crown is the watch's main setting control. A stem connects it to the movement, where different positions can control winding, time or calendar settings. Those operations depend on the movement: a familiar-looking crown is not permission to use another watch's setting instructions.
Position and profile
A crown near 3 o'clock gives the case a conventional right-side control. Moving it toward 4 shifts the projection downward; putting it at 9 moves it to the opposite side. Which feels comfortable depends on the wrist, wearing hand and case shape. Neither a left-side crown nor the Italian term destro automatically tells you who must wear the watch.
Flat and onion describe the visible grip. The former keeps the outline compact; the latter swells outward into a more rounded form. Consider the space between grip and case as well as its size: a dramatic crown can also become a dominant part of the silhouette.
A guard is not a seal
Crown guards are the shoulders beside the crown. They can shield its sides, but they do not establish water resistance. Seiko distinguishes ordinary pull-out crowns from screw-down crowns, which must be unlocked before use and relocked afterward. Its instructions warn against forcing the threads. In the atelier
Flat/onion profile and guards are independent visual choices. Crown position is constrained by the modeled movement: this catalogue keeps the crown at 3 for visible calendars, small-seconds and chronograph calibres, and active moonphase or off-centre power-reserve displays, so the stem stays aligned with their fixed indications. Another position is rejected with an explanation, not silently restored after accepting an incompatible design.
Where other positions are available, the complete illustrated mechanism rotates with its stem direction; moving only an exterior crown would leave a disconnected control. Source stem heights and original support sockets establish the model's route, not a complete reconstruction of the manufacturer's keyless works. The builder does not model screw-down threads or operable crown settings. It is a design study, not a certified sealing assembly or material simulation. Check the side view for balance with the case shape, and follow the actual manufacturer's manual when handling a real watch.
Digital modules replace these analog crown choices with their own fixed button layouts and visible operating controls. Their functional in-page buttons do not make the analog crown or chronograph pushers interactive.
